Bookplate for Johannes Wagner, 1792.

A handpainted bookplate for Johannes Wagner, a student at the Pikeland School in Chester County, Pa., using an elaborate fraktur script. The bookplate has been attributed to the Pennsylvania folk artist Johann Adam Eyer, who made songbooks and bookplates for his students. The design is in three parts, separated by red bands: Eyer's angel at top, the inscription in the center, and a verse in red ink at bottom. The plate is dated 13 February 1792 and signed "von J.F.E." for Johann Friedrich Eyer, the artist's brother, also a teacher in the schools, who apparently helped in the making of fraktur. The bookplate is laid into Neu-vermehrt-und vollständiges Gesang-Buch (Marburg und Frankfurt: Brönner, 1785).
